Environmental Pollution 

When we talk of the environment, we usually mean the soil, water, and the air around us. These elements are linked to one another in a balance. Today, this balance is threatened and jeopardised mainly because of man's greed. Man exploits the environment ruthlessly for his insatiable greed. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "The Earth has enough for everybody's needs, but not for everybody's greed." We have not paid any heed to these words. The World Environment Day is observed on the 5th of June every year. On that day, a lot of cacophony is made about the need to

protect the environment, but driven by our greed, we go on plundering the earth. We have plundered nature for long. Now, nature, it seems, is taking its revenge. The environment has become heavily polluted with the introduction of contaminants in the soil, water, and air. This is causing instability and disorder and threatening all life forms-plant, animal, and human with a breakdown. 

Soil pollution occurs when soil loses its structure along with biological and chemical properties. It happens due to the overuse of man- made chemicals like pesticides and fertilisers. Soil pollution results in cancer, leukaemia, and skin problems.

Discharge of untreated waste, dumping of industrial effluent, and run off from agricultural fields cause water pollution. Increasing use of synthetic organic substances also contributes to it. Ground water contains the residue of human agricultural practices. thrown into water also cause water pollution. Use of polluted water by means of drinking, bathing, and washing clothes results in a lot of bacterial infections and diseases causing typhoid, cholera, dparatyphoid, dysentery etc.

The number of industrial plants and factories is increasing. Most of them are not equipped with measures to reduce the pollution caused by them. As a result, smoke and gases released from them are harmful and pollute the air. Besides, smoke released from buses, lorries, and other vehicles adds to air pollution. Domestic cooking done by using coal forms a thick blanket of gas and dust, and smoke hanging over the city. Air pollution various respiratory troubles. With causes relentless tree felling, the amount of oxygen released from the trees and plants is getting diminished. The earth is like our mother. She nourishes and sustains us. We are very intimately related to her environment. We should not forget it. The sword of Damocles is hanging over her head. We should be the crusaders for her cause. There should be a combined effort globally for environmental awareness. Without environmental awareness and mass effort, such a serious problem can hardly be prevented. We must remember by way of destroying ecological balance in our environment, we threaten our own existence.
